  1. On Tuesday of this week I was in class when the “In School Suspension” teacher came in my room looking for work for a student. I asked who it was and was told Damion. Damion has difficulty communicating with most of the teachers and administration. He is combative, withdrawn, and hanging with the wrong students. I asked Lemont how many days he would out of class and the response was he may be in an “out of school” suspension shortly because of the way he is acting right now. He wouldn’t go to the room and was threatening to leave school. My free period was 5 minutes away. I told Lemont if he could get him downstairs I would come down and talk to him after 1st hour was over. After class I went to find Damion. Lemont said he was in the room but was trying to sleep and uncooperative. I went in to talk to him. Damion is very smart in Math so I knew if he had his Math assignment and I could explain it to him, he would do the Math. It helps that he respects and likes me. I found a book, paper, and a pencil. He got straight to work. I told him I knew he could do the right thing and to try to get through the day without any problems. He didn’t respond so I said it again. His response with a smile was “I heard you”. I said thank you for listening and do the best you can. I told him I would help him later if he didn’t understand something. Then I left. Before 2nd hour was over, he was in my room asking questions to clarify his homework. He also told me he was getting his Social Studies homework to finish as well. He was very polite and I told him that I knew he could do the work and do the right thing downstairs. I sent him on his way and I hope I helped him in some way. I want to think so.

Unfortunately I used the Negative Response last week. A student came to my class late without a pass. He wanted to go find a pass and I said “No.” Tim has been told over and over the rules but continually breaks them. His parents protect him and have been known to show up in a classroom to confront a teacher. When he continued to make comments I said, “Do you want to leave?” So he did. I went to the hall to find him and he ignored me. I should have stopped then, but I didn’t. I tried to get him to return and when he didn’t, I said, “Fine you can have a referral.” I told him to go to the office and thought he did. Class ended 30 minutes later and I realized he was still in the hall. I told him to get downstairs and he stormed away. I handled this poorly. Just a few days later I had the same opportunity to work with Tim. He came to study hall with no work and was talking. I sent him to the front table and he continued to talk back all the way there. I tried to talk to him and he ignored me. I told him he could do one of 2 things - talk to me or get a referral. I told him I don’t like referrals and the talk would be so much easier. I made him look at me and got him to smile. We talked and I did not write the referral. We were fine for class later in the day. A much better result.
